One of the first great champions of the game and one of many top Victorians who travelled west in search of work. A champion with Essendon in the VFA, he was known as “Albert the Great”. Albert Thurgood could regularly punt kick over 80m and drop kick over 90m. One of his place kicks (in 1899 with slight wind assistance) was measured at 107 yds 2ft 1in. Essendon was devastated when he came to Fremantle via the Goldfields in 1895 and stayed for four seasons. He had such a cult following that crowds used to follow him as he walked in his football gear to Fremantle Oval.
