Gary Buckenara won only one Simpson Medal but could easily have won three or four. A star in state-of-origin games in the 1980’s, was in WA’s best three in clashes against Victoria in 1981-1983, 1985-1986. His effort in 1983 – seven goals as a ruck- rover resting at half forward – was remarkable. He overcame a serious knee injury in the opening minutes of the 1983 VFL grand final to become known as an outstanding big-game player. Starred in Hawthorn’s 1986 preliminary final when Melbourne’s Jim Stynes conceded a 15m penalty for running across his mark. Coached Sydney in 1992-93 and Subiaco in 1995-96.
