A clever wingman, Barney Grecian was born in Geelong and played there before transferring to Essendon in 1893. He soon became a star in a team of stars but packed up in early 1896 and came to WA to play for West Perth. Appointed captain immediately, he proved highly effective as a player and leader. In his second season West Perth broke Fremantle’s domination to win the premiership, going through the season undefeated. West Perth won another premiership under Grecian in 1899 before ill-health forced his premature retirement.
