One of the greatest players to emerge from the WA Goldfields, “Poet” Smith was a superb half forward whose drop and place kicking was amongst the most accurate ever seen in WA. He was a fine high mark and possessed bewildering evasive skills on the forward lines before his later conversion to a wily fullback. He was selected from the Goldfields for WA’s first three interstate carnival teams (1908, 1911 and 1914) and finished his senior career with five WAFL seasons at East Fremantle.
