At 192cm and 96kg John McIntosh was built almost identically to his son Ashley (West Coast) and is arguably an even more complete footballer.  Smaller players envied his pace, medium sized players envied his touch and he could mark with the tallest players.  McIntosh enjoyed a stellar career at Claremont and finished third in the 1965 Sandover Medal behind Bill Walker and Barry Cable. He moved to St Kilda in 1970 at the age of 26 and was fifth in the Brownlow Medal in his first season and second the following year, three votes behind triple Brownlow winner Ian Stewart.  He injured a knee in the second semifinal of 1971 and missed the grand final, a massive blow to St Kilda who lost narrowly to Hawthorn.  He hurt the knee again early the following season and was forced into premature retirement at 28.
