Very talented ruckman whose career was delayed by World War II and shortened by his decision to go to Tasmania. Les McClements and Perth ruck giant Merv McIntosh were the dominant big men of the era. McClements was an automatic selection in WA teams of the 1940’s, playing all 16 matches the State played, picked in the best 11 times; In 1947 he tied with the ACT’s Ray Furler for the Tassie Medal. Enjoyed only moderate success at Clarence but became an Apple Isle legend. He oozed confidence and would often talk to himself on the field, convincing himself that he could beat his opponent. Given his strapping physique, he often convinced the opponent as well.
