Mal Brown once described Clive Lewington as ‘a champion player, a champion coach and and even better bloke”. The records show the first two parts of the statement to be true. Anyone who met Lewington, will also testify to the third. His impact would almost certainly have been greater had his career not straddled World War II. He made his debut in 1939 but his impact came after the war as one of the game’s finest centremen and then one of its most successful coaches. In 1947 he polled 22 votes to win the Sandover Medal, beating champion Claremont ruckman Les McLements by seven votes.
